More girls and young women study
science than ever before, resulting in a notable increase in the
number of female science students, yet, compared to their male
colleagues, few go on to achieve professional success.
In Avenging Agnodice the authors
examine the tools that women must have in order to succeed as
scientists. This book grew out of research for a class given by the
author/editor, who combines her background in science with teaching
women's studies.
The book is presented in two parts.
Part One is an historical overview of female scientists. This is a
relatively short section covering a vast period. Selected female
scientists from each historical period are studied in an effort to
identify their struggles and successes. Each woman's battle against
gender discrimination and self doubt is examined within her cultural
context. In Part Two the current conditions for female scientists are
studied via a survey taken by over one hundred female scientists,
primarily in the United States. Parallels are then drawn across all
eras and cultures.
