"As an undergraduate, I
learned about Noether's theorem in my physics classes. Some twenty
years later I happened to see a reference to Noether's theorem, but
this time the reference was to Emmy Noether. I was stunned. Noether
was a woman! I wondered why I never knew that. I was recently
discussing Noether's theorem with one of my former physics professors
and I happened to mention her full name. My former professor's
response: "Noether was a woman?" There was my answer. Emmy
Noether's work was important enough to survive and be taught to every
physics major, but the fact that she was a woman has been forgotten."
